The Multidisciplinary Team (MDT)

When a child may have experienced abuse, no single agency can provide all the support and answers needed. That’s why we use a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) approach—a compassionate, coordinated response that brings together professionals from various fields to support children and their families in a unified way.

The MDT brings together people from different agencies who work side by side, combining their skills and knowledge to ensure the child’s safety, support healing, and pursue justice in a child-sensitive manner.

This collaborative method is central to how CACs support children and their families.

Who Is on the Team

Law Enforcement Officers

These professionals investigate any potential criminal activity. Their role is to gather facts while being mindful of the child’s well-being. We partner with local police departments and sheriff’s offices that have specialized training in child abuse investigations.

Human Services (Child Protective Services)

Their job is to assess safety in the child’s living environment and provide support services to families. They work to ensure children are protected from harm and help families access necessary resources.

Prosecutors

Prosecutors review evidence to determine if legal action is appropriate. They aim to hold offenders accountable while prioritizing the child’s emotional and legal needs throughout the judicial process.

Family Advocates

Advocates are the emotional bridge for families—offering guidance, emotional support, and resources. They stay connected with caregivers, explaining each step of the process in a way that’s easy to understand.

Mental Health Professionals

These team members assess the child’s emotional needs and provide trauma-informed therapy. Their work helps children heal and build resilience.

Medical Professionals

Specially trained medical staff conduct forensic exams and assess the child’s physical health. They explain everything clearly and gently to help children feel safe and supported during their exam.

What Happens During an MDT Meeting?

MDT meetings are a vital part of our coordinated care model. These regular gatherings allow team members to share information, align strategies, and plan next steps for each child’s case. Together, we review the child’s needs and determine the best course of action—always putting the child’s safety and well-being first.

Why This Matters

The MDT approach minimizes the number of times a child has to retell their story and ensures that all professionals involved are working from the same page. It’s a model rooted in compassion, collaboration, and accountability—and it’s central to how Child Advocacy Centers help children move forward with hope.
